LITTLE SAINTS CHRISTIAN PRESCHOOL
Little Saints Christian Preschool Program has been developed to meet the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of the young child. The environment encourages trust and independence. The emphasis is on helping children gain positive self-concepts, self-discipline, and warm relationships with others.
PHILOSOPHY
To be a child is to play. Play is the way a child learns to give, to take, and to make friends. Through play, the child investigates and explores his world. A child finds excitement and pleasure in learning and creating, and satisfaction in discovering ways to solve problems alone.
Through active learning, a child’s mind, body, and emotions develop. Believing this, the goal of the preschool is to organize and direct play experience in such a way that children learn the concepts that are the foundations for future success. They develop positive attitudes about themselves and the world.
STAFF
The Director of Little Saints Preschool is Carol Shaver, M.A.  Deena Bailey is a part of the teaching team and has several years experience working with preschool children.
THE PRESCHOOL
The preschool is both flexible and structured. There are periods of self- directed play, when children have the freedom to select activities prepared by the teachers. There are small groups and individual experiences as well as the more structured teacher-directed learning, story time, and music circles. Creative expression is continually encouraged through art and sensory activities.
A schedule is created to meet the developmental needs of the children. At the beginning of the new school year, for example, home, family and “All About Me” will be the theme because children become more comfortable in a new place if they can relate to something familiar to them. As the year goes on, the schedule is expanded to such areas as community, transportation, the senses, religion, and science.
Throughout the year, basic concepts of color, size shape, numbers, alphabet, and language development are offered.
Each day, there are new experiences and new ways of doing things. Children are encouraged to explore their changing environment –to try the musical instruments, to pretend in the housekeeping corner, and to paint with two colors and experience them becoming one. The teachers will always be nearby to help when needed and to give emotional support when the going gets tough.
PARENT-STAFF COOPERATION
Your children are with us for only a short period of their lives. This time is an important part of their development. Only through mutual sharing and cooperation can we fully meet the child’s needs. What happens at home is the most important part of your child’s life. When the child comes to preschool, he/she does not leave home – the home comes with the child. A happy day shows as well as an unhappy one. It is important that we know about the death of a pet or a move to a new neighborhood because these things will affect your child’s behavior. If we understand, we can help grow the child.
In turn, we want to keep you informed about your child’s progress. You need to know about the block tower your child built and how proud he/she was of it. Parents are invited to visit us often. Observing your child in the preschool environment offers an opportunity to see him/her interacting with their peers and the staff. This can provide new insights. We will have several field trips; we will need signed permission slips for those who cannot drive their child themselves.

“I AM SPECIAL”
PHILOSOPHY & PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
PHILOSOPHY
The “I Am Special” program is based on the belief that all children need to develop positive self-concepts. Children’s ability to know God and their ideas about God are strongly influenced by their ideas of themselves. Children need to feel good about themselves in order to love others as themselves.
The major thrust of the “I Am Special” program is to provide religious influence as an attempt to help children form Christian attitudes. The concern at the early childhood level is to impart religious influence and example more that to teach a great deal of formal information (doctrine) about our faith.
It is believed that parents play the most significant role in impairing religious influence to young children; therefore, throughout the “I Am Special” program, parents are continually informed of lessons and activities as well as ways to extend the lessons at home to aid parents in nurturing the faith of their children.
“I Am Special” recognizes that children “learn by doing;” therefore, the following lesson development techniques are used:
Sensory Activities          Filmstrips              Song
Dramatizations               Finger Plays         Stories
Action Games                Prayers                Poems
Art Activities                   Celebrations         Take Home Activities
 OBJECTIVES
1.     To help children develop positive self-concepts through increased awareness of their own special God-given characteristics and abilities.
2.     To help children develop positive concepts about family, friends, church, and school.
3.     To help children learn about a loving and caring God by discovering      and appreciating the world around them.
4.     To help children increase their awareness and appreciation of the five primary senses as gifts from God.
5.     To help children develop Christian attitudes of sharing, taking turns,      listening, helping, loving, thanking, and celebrating.
6.     To teach children about prayer and how to pray.
7.     To introduce the children to liturgical seasons and to help them prepare for the religious celebration of Christmas and Easter.

LUNCH / SNACK
No gum chewing is allowed! Parents must provide lunch / snack and juice drinks for their child.  We can refrigerate them here. Birthdays are special. Please let us know in advance if you plan to provide treats for the occasion.
CLOTHING
Children will be involved in many types of activities at the preschool and should be dressed accordingly. All children should have a labeled change of clothes (pants,, shirt, socks, underwear) to be kept at the preschool. All boots and coats also need to be labeled. Little Saints Preschool is not responsible for lost articles of clothing.
BOOK BAGS AND SUPPLIES
Your child ill need to bring a full size book bag to school each day. This bag will be used to bring home papers and projects and for transporting your child’s lunch / snack.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
Children should arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before the start of each session. This allows the teacher time to prepare the room before class begins. We are asking that all families stay in their vehicles and form a line outside the front entrance. A teacher will assist your child out olf your vehicle and into the class. We will do the same on departure. Please be prompt.
PERSONAL TOYS
Children should not bring personal toys from home unless you are notified of a special unit we are studying or we have “show and tell.”
